Deep-Sea Exploration to Save the Ocean: Achieving Protections for Living Seafloor Treasures off Southern California
Oceana is the world’s largest ocean conservation organization, campaigning to protect habitats, restore depleted fisheries, and safeguard ocean wildlife. In 2016, Oceana Senior Scientist Geoff Shester led a scientific ocean expedition to document never-before-seen coral gardens, ancient sponge beds, and spectacular undersea mountains off the coast of Southern California using a remotely operated vehicle. Two years later, with support from the fishing industry, the Pacific Fishery Management Council unanimously voted to adopt Oceana’s proposal to protect over 16,000 square miles of seafloor habitats from destructive bottom trawl fishing. Dr. Shester’s presentation will offer a behind the scenes look at how Oceana brought new discoveries to fishermen and fishery managers to achieve the new protections for our incredible ocean backyard.
