Why a Clothing Swap for America Recycles Day
A clothing swap isn’t just about refreshing your closet, it’s about tackling one of the biggest hidden polluters: the fashion industry.
- Clothing Waste Crisis: Americans throw away 11 million tons of textiles every year - most ending up in landfills where they can take decades to break down.
- Overproduction Problem: Globally, we produce 100 billion garments a year, far more than we could ever wear. In fact, experts say that even if we stopped producing new clothes today, there would still be enough clothing on the planet to dress the next five generations.
- Environmental Footprint: The fashion industry is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions and massive water waste - making one cotton t-shirt can take 2,700 liters of water (enough for one person to drink for 2.5 years)
By hosting a clothing swap, we are:
✨ Reducing waste headed to landfills.
✨ Extending the life cycle of clothes already made.
✨ Inspiring community members to rethink the way we shop
and dress.
✨ Showing that reuse is just as powerful as recycling.
